"Just wanted to let anyone that is looking for a reliable, well priced, honest company to do this I HIGHLY recommend Barrons Solar Wash. He answered right away. Looked at my panels on Google Maps and gave me a quote based off of that with no dramatics or scummy sales tactics.

In comparison ,earlier that day I had a pest company come out and do an in person quote and the original quote was for almost double price of what Barron's charged, then to "drop the price "gave us the military discount which still was way higher that Barron's and pretended to have "forgotten to add the netting" on the invoice , a $500 value we were getting for "free". Seriously go away. After all his mistakes and discounts Barrons still beat there price by $500

Today he came, completed the job, accompanied by pictures and wonderful cleaning of my panels and a life time warranty on the netting for the life of the company. Could not be more thrilled with the transparency, fair price, promptness, and quality of the job. 10 out of 10 all day long."

Solar panel systems are a fantastic investment for residential homes, providing renewable energy and reducing electricity bills. However, these systems are not immune to potential issues, including damage caused by rats. In Henderson, NV, the rodent population has exploded post-pandemic, impacting businesses and homeowners alike. This blog will explore how rats can affect your solar panel system and what steps you can take to prevent and mitigate these problems.

How Rats Can Affect Solar Panel Systems

           Chewing on Wires and Cables:

Rats instinctively gnaw on objects to prevent their teeth from growing too long. Unfortunately, this includes the wires and cables associated with solar panels. Chewed wires can lead to electrical shorts, system malfunctions, and fire hazards.

           Nesting Under Panels:

Solar panels provide a warm and sheltered environment, making them attractive nesting spots for rats. However, nests and waste can obstruct airflow, leading to overheating and reduced panel efficiency. Additionally, nesting materials can attract other pests, creating further complications.

           Physical Damage to Panels:

In some cases, rats can cause physical damage to the solar panels themselves. Scratching, biting, or nesting can damage the panel surfaces, reducing their ability to capture sunlight efficiently.

Preventive Measures to Protect Your Solar Panel System

           Regular Inspections:

Regularly inspect your solar panel system for signs of rat activity, such as chewed wires, droppings, or nests. Early detection can help you address issues before they cause significant damage.

           Rodent-Proofing Your Home:

Seal any gaps or entry points around your home that could allow rats to access your roof and solar panels. Use materials like steel wool or metal flashing, which rats cannot easily chew through.

           Install Mesh Barriers:

Consider installing mesh barriers around the perimeter of your solar panels. These barriers can prevent rats from getting under the panels and causing damage.

Engage professional pest control services to assess and treat your home for rat infestations. Pest control experts can provide tailored solutions to keep rats away from your solar panel system.

           Traps and Deterrents:

Use rat traps or deterrents around your home and garden to reduce the rat population. Ultrasonic deterrents, for example, emit sounds unpleasant to rats but inaudible to humans.

           Maintenance and Cleaning:

Keep the area around your solar panels clean and free of debris. Trim back any overhanging branches or foliage that could provide a pathway for rats to access your roof.

           Mitigating Damage

           Repair Damaged Wires Promptly:

If you discover chewed wires, have them repaired immediately by a professional electrician. This can prevent further damage and reduce the risk of electrical hazards.

           Remove Nests:

Safely remove any nests found under your solar panels. Be cautious when doing so, as rats can carry diseases. If in doubt, seek professional assistance.

           Regular Maintenance:

Schedule regular maintenance checks with your solar panel provider or cleaner. They can inspect the system for potential issues and ensure everything functions correctly.

           Conclusion

Entering the realm of residential solar ownership is a significant step, and optimizing your solar panels' performance is crucial. The installation angle is pivotal in this scenario, particularly when considering the fixed adjustments. Let's explore why the installation angle matters and how it influences the efficiency of your solar energy system.

           1. The Magic of the Right Angle:

Imagine your solar panels as sun-catchers eagerly soaking up every bit of sunlight. To make this solar romance efficient, they need the right angle. A flat position might seem straightforward, but the magic happens when they're tilted. This ensures they catch sunlight head-on, maximizing energy absorption.

           2. The Tilted Symphony with the Seasons:

The sun doesn't stick to one routine; it has its own seasonal choreography. Tilted panels adapt to this dance, optimizing energy capture. But what if adjusting isn't in the cards for you? That's where the initial installation angle becomes paramount. Ensuring the correct tilt from the start sets the stage for year-round efficiency.

           3. Latitude Wisdom for Fixed Panels:

Even if you can't tweak your panels, knowing your latitude is like giving them a map. It helps you understand the optimal fixed angle for your location, ensuring you set realistic expectations for energy production based on where you are on the globe.

           4. Reflection Risks and Regular Cleaning:

Flat panels can be like mirrors, bouncing off sunlight instead of absorbing it. While fixed adjustments are a constraint, maintaining cleanliness is your tool for combating reflection. Regular cleaning ensures your panels remain efficient by reducing the chances of sunlight bouncing away.

           5. Heat Handling Tactics:

Fixed panels might not have the luxury of adjustable angles, but they can benefit from good airflow. Proper ventilation around your panels can prevent excessive heat build-up, contributing to a more comfortable operating temperature and sustaining efficiency over time.

           6. Installing Right the First Time:

Perhaps the most crucial aspect is getting the installation angle right from the start. Once your panels are up, adjusting becomes a challenge. Ensure your installation team understands the importance of the correct tilt angle for your location, maximizing your solar potential from day one.

           Conclusion:

In the realm of residential solar panels, the installation angle stands as a silent hero, contributing significantly to solar efficiency. While fixed adjustments are a reality, the key lies in achieving the correct angle during installation, ultimately optimizing the potential of the solar investment. This ensures that panels continue to shine bright throughout their lifetime. Consider the services of a solar panel cleaner adept at regular inspections. Apart from keeping panels clean, they can evaluate the panel angles and gauge energy reception, maximizing the benefits of solar power.

Pigeons, typically considered gentle, can become a significant nuisance when gathering around homes, leaving behind messy droppings that may lead to damage. To prevent pigeon-related issues, homeowners can adopt various practical measures. From eliminating food sources to employing scare tactics, this guide explores proactive tips to deter pigeons and maintain a clean living space. Here are some tips to help keep pigeons away from your house:

           1. Remove Food Sources:

Pigeons are attracted to food. Ensure that outdoor pet food, bird feeders, and spilled grains are cleaned up regularly. Secure trash bins and avoid leaving food scraps around.

           2. Limit Water Access:

Pigeons need water, so try to limit their access to water sources. Fix leaks and make other water sources less accessible to pigeons, like pools and ponds.

           3. Seal Entry Points:

Pigeons may find their way into attics, balconies, or other sheltered areas. Seal any potential entry points, such as gaps or openings in the eaves, vents, or windows.

           4. Install Bird Spikes:

Bird spikes can be placed on ledges, windowsills, and other surfaces where pigeons roost. These spikes make it uncomfortable for pigeons to land and discourage them from settling in those areas.

           5. Use Bird Netting and mesh:

Bird netting can be installed over balconies, patios, or other open spaces to prevent pigeons from accessing these areas.

           Bird mesh

can be installed around solar panels to prevent pigeons from nesting under them.

           6. Scare Tactics:

Using scare tactics like Motion-activated devices that emit noise or sudden movements can also be effective.

           7. Predator Decoys:

Placing decoys of natural pigeon predators, such as owls or predatory birds, may help deter pigeons. IMPORTANT- be sure to move the decoys regularly to prevent pigeons from becoming accustomed to them.

           8. Ultrasonic Devices:

Ultrasonic devices emit high-frequency sounds unpleasant for pigeons but generally not audible to humans. These devices can be effective in deterring pigeons from specific areas.

           9. Maintain Cleanliness:

Regularly clean areas where pigeons gather to remove droppings and feathers. Pigeons are more likely to avoid areas that are kept clean.

           10. Use Repellents:

Consider using bird repellents, such as aversion gels or sprays, on surfaces where pigeons roost. These products create a surface that is uncomfortable for birds.

           11. Professional Assistance:

Winter Cleaning for Enhanced Energy Production:

           Dust Storms and Debris Accumulation:

           Preventing Mineral Deposits:

Desert climates may have water sources with higher mineral content. When water evaporates on the panels, it can leave behind mineral deposits. Winter cleaning helps prevent this buildup of deposits, ensuring the panels' longevity.

Summer Cleaning for Glass and Component Care:

           Intense Heat and Dust Accumulation:

Summer in the desert brings intense heat and the potential for accelerated dust accumulation. Regular cleaning becomes crucial to maintain the transparency of the glass surface, allowing the panels to capture the maximum amount of sunlight.

           Bird Droppings and Tree Sap:

           High Temperatures and Component Care:

           Conclusion:

As we harness the power of the sun to generate clean energy, it's crucial to pay attention to the often-overlooked hero of the solar panel system— the glass surface. Solar panel glass plays a vital role in capturing sunlight and converting it into electricity. However, like any other glass, it can face deterioration over time if not correctly cared for. Let's explore the factors affecting solar panel glass and how to keep it in top-notch condition for optimal performance.

           1. Dirt and Dust: The Silent Efficiency Blocker

One of the main culprits affecting solar panels is the accumulation of dirt and dust. Over time, these particles can form a layer on the glass, hindering the penetration of sunlight.

           2. The Abrasive Challenge: Scratches and Solar Efficiency

Just like your everyday glass, solar panel glass is susceptible to scratches. Dirt particles, especially if they are abrasive or contain hard substances, can scratch the surface of glass. Over time, these scratches accumulate, reducing the clarity and transparency of the glass.

           3. Chemical Exposure: Battling the Elements

Solar panels are often exposed to the elements, including pollutants and environmental chemicals. While solar glass is designed to resist these challenges, prolonged exposure can lead to chemical reactions. For example, acidic or alkaline components in dirt can react with the glass, causing etching or corrosion. This chemical deterioration can weaken the glass over time.

Cleaning solar panels with dish soap is generally not recommended for several reasons:

           1. Residue Buildup:

Dish soap is designed to cut through grease and remove food residue from dishes. When used on solar panels, it can leave behind a soapy residue that may not be easily rinsed away. this residue can potentially act as a dust magnet. Dust particles may stick to the soap residue, making the surface appear dusty. This residue can accumulate over time, reducing the efficiency of the solar panels by blocking sunlight and decreasing their energy output.

            2. Ineffectiveness on Certain Soiling:

Solar panels can accumulate various types of soiling, including dust, dirt, bird droppings, pollen, and mineral deposits from rainwater. Dawn dish soap may not effectively remove some of these types of soiling, particularly mineral deposits, which can require specialized cleaning solutions.

           3. Potential for Scratches:

Scrubbing solar panels with abrasive materials or scrubbing pads, which may be necessary if the dish soap is not effectively removing dirt, can potentially scratch the glass surface of the panels, causing permanent damage.

           4. Reduced Longevity:

The use of dish soap on solar panels can potentially reduce their lifespan, as the buildup of residues and the risk of scratches can hinder the panels' ability to generate electricity efficiently over time.

While dish soap is an effective solution for cutting through grease and removing food residue from dishes, its use on solar panels presents a range of potential drawbacks. The soapy residue it leaves behind can act as a dust magnet, leading to a gradual accumulation of dirt and reducing the efficiency of the panels. Furthermore, it may prove ineffective against certain types of soiling, such as mineral deposits, requiring specialized cleaning solutions that are better suited to the task.

Additionally, the use of abrasive materials or scrubbing pads to clean solar panels when dish soap falls short in removing dirt can result in scratches on the glass surface, causing permanent damage and further diminishing the panels' performance. Altogether, these factors can potentially reduce the longevity of solar panels and hinder their ability to generate electricity efficiently over time. It is essential to consider alternative cleaning methods and products specifically designed for solar panel maintenance to ensure their optimal performance and durability.

Considering these concerns regarding the use of dish soap for solar panel cleaning, it is highly advisable to explore alternative methods and, in many cases, consider hiring a professional solar panel cleaner. Professionals possess the knowledge, experience, and specialized equipment required to safely and effectively clean solar panels without the risk of damage, residue buildup, or reduced longevity.

Solar panels are engineered with precision to capture sunlight and convert it into usable energy. However, even the smallest hindrance, such as paint splatters, can disrupt this process significantly.

           Reflection and Absorption:

Paint, especially darker shades, can absorb sunlight, leading to increased temperatures on the panel's surface. This not only affects efficiency but also contributes to wear and tear over time.

           Microcracks and Damage

: Paint splatters can create microcracks on the panel's surface, allowing moisture to seep in. Over time, this moisture can corrode the cells and wiring, reducing the panel's lifespan.

           Altered Sunlight Distribution

: When sunlight hits a painted area, it scatters in unpredictable ways, leading to uneven energy generation across the panel.

           Prevention and Remova

           Protective Coatings

: Consider applying a specialized anti-reflective coating to the surface of your solar panels. These coatings not only prevent paint adhesion but also enhance light absorption, boosting overall efficiency.

           Prompt Remova

l: If paint splatters occur, remove them promptly using a soft cloth or sponge soaked in an approved cleaning solution. Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the panel's surface.

           Regular Maintenance

: Implement a routine maintenance schedule to inspect panels for any signs of paint damage. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent long-term efficiency loss.

           :

Limescale buildup is a common issue, especially in regions with hard water. Henderson, Las Vegas, and Paradise, Nevada, has a desert climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, short winters. It is indeed possible for dust on solar panels to mix with rainwater (when it does rain) and form a residue that contains minerals. If the rainwater contains calcium or magnesium, and if it evaporates quickly due to the high temperatures common in Las Vegas, limescale deposits could potentially form on surfaces, including solar panels.

           Light Diffusion:

Limescale deposits diffuse sunlight, preventing it from reaching the photovoltaic cells directly. This diffusion leads to reduced energy production.

Similar to paint, limescale can lead to localized overheating due to uneven sunlight distribution. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can degrade the solar cells.

           Increased Maintenance Frequency:

Limescale buildup necessitates more frequent cleaning, increasing the overall maintenance effort and cost.

           4. Ugly Aesthetics

           5. Voided Warranty

           1. Reduced Light Transmission

One of the primary ways that dirt affects solar panels is by reducing light transmission. Solar panels work by using the photovoltaic effect to convert sunlight into electricity. When dirt and dust build up on the surface of the solar panel, they act as a barrier, blocking sunlight from reaching the solar cells beneath. This results in a decrease in the amount of light available for energy conversion.

           2. Light Reflection

In addition to blocking light, some dirt particles on the surface of the solar panel may have reflective properties. When sunlight hits these reflective particles, it can get scattered or redirected away from the solar cells. This not only reduces the amount of energy that can be absorbed but also causes a loss of efficiency as the redirected light is not contributing to electricity generation.

Dirt and debris can create localized shading on the solar panel's surface. Even partial shading can disrupt the flow of electrical current within the panel, leading to energy losses. This phenomenon is known as the "partial shading effect." It's crucial to note that shading can have a more significant impact on solar panel efficiency than you might think, so keeping the

Dirt and contaminants on a solar panel can also lead to localized overheating. When sunlight is partially absorbed by dirt and not converted into electricity, it can generate heat. Over time, excessive heating can reduce the efficiency of the solar cells and may even damage them. Proper

Have you ever wondered how to read your NV Energy net meter and understand your energy usage? In this guide, we will explain the basics of reading an NV Energy net meter and how to determine if your energy bill is correct. By understanding the information displayed on your net meter, you can gain insights into your energy consumption and make more informed decisions to save energy and reduce costs. Let's dive in!

Understanding the Net Meter

           :

The NV Energy net meter is an essential tool that measures the energy flow between your home and the utility company. It consists of two main numbers labeled "cst 005" and "cst 015" and a row of dashes along the bottom.

           a. "cst 005" - Energy Received:

The first number, "cst 005," indicates the amount of energy that NV Energy is supplying to your home. This number represents the energy you are consuming from the utility company. If the dashes on this display are moving to the right, it means you are using more energy than you are generating on your own.

b. "cst 015" - Energy Sent Back:

The second number, "cst 015," represents the energy you are sending back to NV Energy. If you have installed solar panels or any other renewable energy generation system, this number will reflect the surplus energy you are producing and returning to the grid. When the dashes on this display move to the left, it indicates that you are exporting energy.

c. Dashes along the Bottom:

The row of dashes along the bottom serves as a visual aid to determine the direction of energy flow. If the dashes move to the left, it means you are exporting energy, while movement to the right indicates that you are importing energy from the utility company.

Calculating Energy Usage and Verifying Your Bill

           :

To determine your net energy usage and verify your bill, follow these steps:

Step 1: Note the values on the "cst 005" and "cst 015" displays.

Step 2: Subtract the value of "cst 015" from "cst 005."

Step 3: The resulting number represents your net energy usage. If the value is positive, it means you consumed more energy than you exported, and vice versa.

Example

           :

Let's say the reading on "cst 005" is 1,000 kWh, and the reading on "cst 015" is 600 kWh. To calculate your energy usage, subtract 600 kWh from 1,000 kWh, resulting in a net energy usage of 400 kWh.

By comparing this net energy usage with your energy bill, you can ensure the accuracy of your charges. If there are significant discrepancies between the meter reading and your bill, it is advisable to contact NV Energy customer service for clarification.

Conclusion

           :

Protecting Your Solar Panels From Pesky Pigeons

As much as we love the sight of shiny, clean solar panels soaking up the sun, there's an unfortunate reality that comes with them: pigeons. These feathered friends can cause severe damage to your solar panels, affecting their efficiency and potentially costing you thousands in repairs.

One of the most significant issues with pigeons is their habit of making nests under solar panels. Not only can these nests cause damage to the panels themselves, but they can also be a fire hazard if debris and nesting material are left to accumulate. And if you thought pigeon droppings were terrible enough on their own, imagine the mess that can be created when they're mixed with nesting material!

That's where bird proofing and solar panel cleaning come in. By taking preventative measures to keep pigeons away from your solar panels and ensuring they're properly cleaned and maintained, you can protect your investment and keep those panels running smoothly for years to come.

Of course, preventing pigeons from perching on your solar panels in the first place is the best solution. This includes everything from installing bird spikes and deterrent strips to implementing netting and other measures that discourage pigeons from landing on your panels. By taking proactive steps to keep pigeons away from your solar panels, you can avoid the damage and health risks associated with their droppings and nesting material.

Regular solar panel cleaning is also essential to prevent the buildup of debris and nesting material, which can compromise the efficiency of your panels. Professional solar panel cleaning services can ensure that your panels are free of dirt, debris, and anything else affecting their performance.

Solar panel cleaning and bird proofing are essential components of solar panel maintenance, especially when it comes to pesky pigeons. By investing in preventative measures to keep your panels clean and protected, you can enjoy the benefits of sustainable energy without worrying about the damage caused by these feathered foes.

So the next time you see a pigeon perched on a solar panel, remember the potential damage they can cause – not just from their droppings but also from their nesting habits. Don't let these birds ruin your investment – take action with bird proofing and solar panel cleaning and keep your panels running smoothly for years to come.

Do you know what's better than a bright, sunny day? A bright, sunny day powering your home with clean, renewable energy! Solar panels are an excellent way to take advantage of the sun's abundant energy and reduce your carbon footprint. But to keep your solar panels working efficiently, it's essential to keep them clean and well-maintained. That's where thermal imaging comes in!

Solar panel cleaners use thermal imaging cameras to help identify areas of your solar panels that may need attention. By taking a thermal image of the solar panels, cleaners can quickly spot areas of the panels that may be hotter than others. Hot spots can indicate a problem with the solar panel, such as a damaged cell or loose connection. By catching these issues early, solar panel cleaners can help ensure that your solar panels operate at peak efficiency, producing the maximum energy possible.

But how does thermal imaging work? Essentially, thermal imaging cameras use infrared technology to detect heat. Different colors represent different heat levels, allowing solar panel cleaners to identify hot spots that may indicate a problem quickly. This process is non-invasive and doesn't require physical contact with the panels, so it's a quick and easy way to check for any issues.

Thermal imaging is just one tool that solar panel cleaners use to keep your solar panels in top condition. Regular maintenance and cleaning can keep your panels working efficiently, saving you money on your energy bills and helping you do your part for the environment. So, if you're looking for a reliable and efficient way to keep your solar panels in top shape, be sure to ask your solar panel cleaner about using thermal imaging during your next inspection!

Protect Your Solar Panels from the Dangers of Rain and Hard Water: Unleash Maximum Efficiency with RO/DI Water

Do you know the impact that rainwater and hard water can have on your solar panels? If not, it's time to understand the dangers these forms of water pose to your solar energy system. In this guide, we'll dive into the effects that rainwater and hard water can have on your solar panels, and why you should consider a better alternative.

First, let's talk about the problem with rainwater. Rainwater can contain pollutants, such as dust, bird droppings, and other particles, which can cause a build-up of dirt and grime on the surface of your solar panels. This can reduce the amount of sunlight that is able to reach the solar cells within the panels, resulting in a decrease in their performance and efficiency. In addition, the dirt and grime can become more difficult to remove over time, making the glass appear cloudy or hazy.

Now, let's look at the dangers of hard water. Hard water contains high levels of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, which can cause mineral deposits to form on the surface of solar panels and their glass. This can reduce the amount of sunlight that is able to reach the solar cells within the panels, resulting in a decrease in their performance and efficiency. Over time, the mineral deposits from hard water can become more difficult to remove, making the glass appear cloudy or hazy. The minerals in hard water can also react with the surface of the panels, causing corrosion and weakening the panels, putting them at risk of damage.

So, what can you do to protect your solar panels from the dangers of rainwater and hard water? The answer is simple: use RO/DI water, or reverse osmosis/deionized water to clean the solar panels. RO/DI water is a highly purified form of water that has had its mineral content reduced, making it a much better choice for your solar panels. And the best part is, RO/DI water can effectively strip away the calcium and other contaminants that are on the glass, ensuring that your panels are kept clean and clear.

And if you're worried about doing it yourself, turn to professional solar panel cleaners who can provide you with RO/DI water and help keep your solar panels in top shape. They can give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your solar panels are protected from the dangers of rainwater and hard water, and that they are being cleaned with a highly purified form of water that can effectively strip away any contaminants.

Protecting Your Solar Panels from Bird Damage: A Guide to Effective Bird Proofing Methods

Solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years as a clean and sustainable source of power. However, as more and more solar panels are installed on rooftops and in other outdoor locations, the issue of bird damage has become a growing concern. Birds can perch on and nest in solar panels, causing damage to the equipment and reducing its efficiency.

One solution to this problem is bird proofing solar panels. Bird proofing solar panels involves using various methods to deter birds from landing on and nesting in the panels. Some common methods include:

            Physical barriers:

These can include screens, netting, or spikes to make it difficult for birds to land. These barriers can be effective, but they must be installed correctly to ensure they do not damage the solar panels.

           Visual deterrents:

These can include reflective tape, shiny objects, or even fake hawks placed near the solar panels to scare away birds. These deterrents work by making the solar panels appear uninviting to birds.

           Sonic deterrents:

These can include bird distress calls, alarms, or other loud noises played in the vicinity of the solar panels. The idea is to create an environment that is uncomfortable or even frightening for birds.

            Chemical repellents:

This method uses chemical sprays or gels to create an unpleasant smell or taste on the surface, making it uninviting for birds to land or nest.

It's important to note that bird proofing solar panels must be done in a way that is safe for birds and other wildlife, as well as people and pets. Also, It’s important to keep in mind that each location is unique and the best bird proofing method will depend on the specific site, the type of birds that are causing problems, and other factors. Consulting with a professional solar panel cleaner is recommended for best results.

In conclusion, bird damage to solar panels can be a significant problem, but there are several effective methods for bird proofing solar panels.

Solar panels are a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to generate power for your home or business. However, birds can pose a significant threat to these panels, causing damage and reducing their efficiency. In this blog post, we'll discuss how to install wire mesh barriers around your solar panels to protect them from bird damage and ensure they continue to generate clean energy for your home or business.

One of the most common ways birds damage solar panels is by nesting under them. This can cause scratches, cracks, and other damage, which can be costly to repair. To prevent birds from nesting under your solar panels, you can install wire mesh barriers.

The first step is to measure the area around the solar panels and the width between the solar panels and roof that needs to be protected from birds. This will determine the amount of wire mesh and size you will need. Purchase enough wire mesh to cover the area around the solar panels. The mesh should be fine enough to keep birds from getting through, but not so fine that it blocks airflow from reaching the solar panels.

Next, make sure the area around and under the solar panels is clean and free of debris. This will make it easier to install the wire mesh. Cut the wire mesh to the appropriate size to cover the area around the solar panels.

Install the wire mesh around the solar panels by attaching it to the frame using clips or ties. Make sure the wire mesh is tight and secure. If necessary, install supports to keep the wire mesh from sagging.

Once the wire mesh is installed, test it to make sure it is working properly. Regularly check the wire mesh for any damage or wear and repair or replace it as needed.

In conclusion, installing wire mesh barriers around your solar panels is an effective way to protect them from bird damage and ensure they continue to generate clean energy for your home or business.
Airflow: The Other Reason for Bird Proofing

Pigeon proofing, bird barriers, or pigeon barriers. It has many names, but whatever you call it, all that matters is making sure your solar panels have them. Not all residential solar arrays need bird proofing, but in my experience, about 97% of them do, and pigeons are not the only reason. Solar panels achieve peak efficiency between 59° F and 95° F. Depending on your solar panel's temperature coefficient, your efficiency would decrease anywhere from 1% to 5% or more once the temperature is above 95° F. To minimize the loss of production: solar panels are attached to brackets that secure them about 5 inches or more above the roof. This allows air to flow underneath them and helps them try to stay within the range of peak performance.

If you live in Las Vegas or Henderson, Nevada, you know we need all the help we can get to stay cool. When there are no barriers around the solar panels, anything can get under them; they act like a giant garage ready for storage. Leaves, branches, twigs, and plastic bags can be wedged under solar panels by the winds. Pigeons love the protection it offers from predators; it makes a great place to raise a family. The pigeons are more than willing to bring up twigs, fabric, and plastic pieces to make their nests. Pigeons do not have the greatest bathroom etiquette; they don't seem to mind it. They relieve themselves wherever is convenient, and eventually, it piles up around them like snow. This is awesome for pigeons but terrible for solar panels. All this "debris;" restricts the air from cooling down the solar panels efficiently. This will lead to lower absorption and higher energy bills.

Also, fires have been started due to hotspots in the solar panels or faulty wiring that produces an electrical arc that catches nearby debris on fire. Bird proofing your solar panels will keep the airflow moving in and the debris out. It will also deter the pigeons and their waste; they would rather find other homeowners with their solar panels unprotected than waste energy and try to break in and have a party. The best way to prevent pigeons from moving in or getting them out and cleaning up the place if they already have one is to hire a professional solar panel cleaner.

A solar panel cleaner can provide pictures and videos of the system so you can see the situation without being on the roof. They also are equipped with quality products and materials that ensure an effective barrier and a sanitized roof. If the pigeons haven't moved in yet or there is no debris, a simple cleaning below the solar panels is completed before the bird barriers are installed. If the pigeons have been or are still there, the bird-proofing becomes a little more complex. First, they must remove nests, pigeons, and debris under the solar panels. Waste removal is next. Depending on how long and how many pigeons were hanging out, it could equal 10 to 100 pounds of disease-infested pigeon waste. The roof will then be washed and disinfected with enzyme killers, bleach, and water. This is a necessary step to get rid of their scent and bacteria. After all this, the system can be inspected, and bird-proofing can begin.

Professional solar panel cleaners use rubber-coated galvanized steel mesh that will not rust or scratch, along with galvanized steel clips that hook into the frames of the solar panels. Now that the pigeon barriers have been installed, nothing will be able to get underneath them and block the airflow. If a solar panel needs to be worked on, the bird barriers can easily be removed by humans and replaced. Bird-proofing your solar panels can help increase energy production by preventing debris, pigeons, and their waste from building up. It prevents potential faulty wiring from catching debris on fire. And it discourages pigeons making them find another place.

4 Important Numbers That Should Be Checked During a Residential Solar Panel Inspection

           Temperature Coefficient

The temperature coefficient tells you in a percentage per degree Celsius, how much power a solar panel will lose when the outside temperature increases by 1 degree over 77° F. Peak efficiency is between 59° F and 95° F. per IEC standards all panels are tested at 77° F.

For example, if a solar panel has a temperature coefficient of -.38 per 1 degree Celsius and the outside temp is 82° F. then the solar panel’s efficiency would decrease by 1.14%

It also works the other way. If the outside temperature is less than 77° F, say by 3 degrees. Then that solar panels efficiency would increase by 1.14%.

           Why is this important?

Knowing the temperature coefficient allows you to understand how much you’re absorbing or losing due to the conditions for that season, day, and time. After recording this data for a year or more, you will start to understand how weather effects your panels and when to expect the losses or gains.

           Solar Irradiance

Is the measurement of the sun’s intensity over a certain area. it is commonly defined as being an average intensity of 1 kW/m2 also known as Peak Sun Hours. Peak Sun Hours” (PSH) is the number of hours in time that the full sun solar irradiance light level was received at the panels surface at a measurement of 1 kW/m2. The higher the solar irradiance per unit area, the more solar generated electricity can be produced.

If the sun’s energy is falling at 700 W/m2 for 6 PSH per day.

           700 W/m2 X 6 hours = 4200 Wh/m2 or 4.2 kWh/m2 = 4.2 PSH

           Why is this important?

Your PSH can be factored with a single solar panel’s watts, to see how many panels you need to power your house at different times of the seasons. This allows you to see how much excess electricity you have or may need throughout the year.

If you needed 1000 watts a day of solar energy to run the house, and you have a 200-watt panel.

           200 watts X 4.2 PSH = 840 Wh/day

In this case you would need two 200-watt panels to run the house.

Of course, this measurement is only for one part of the year, and these are perfect world numbers. There are many variables that will determine the requirements of the solar panel to power a home. You will need a certain number of panels in one part of the year that will be different in another. But it gives a good base for what is required.

           Tilt and Orientation

The angle or tilt of the solar panels can affect the amount of energy it can absorb and is based on two factors latitude and season. For the solar panels to produce the maximum amount of energy, they must be positioned perpendicular to the sun. for the best performance, a simple rule of thumb is to add 15° to your latitude in the winter and subtract 15° in the summer. The orientation is also very important. In the Northern Hemisphere, the solar panels should face Solar or Geographic South, which is the direction towards the South Pole. While it is unreasonable, difficult, and downright crazy to change the angle of your roof mounted solar panels every time the seasons change. And not considering the other many factors such as roof pitch, temperature, and obstructions. Knowing the tilt and orientation of the panels will let you know if you are on the right track to optimum energy absorption at the right time.

Why, How, and Who Should Be Cleaning Your Solar Panels

Imagine never cleaning your car's windshield, do you think your view would be the same as the day you bought the car? Or imagine washing your car without touching it, using only hose water, and then waiting for it to air dry. The reality is, this is happening to Solar Panels across Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City. In 2020, Las Vegas went 240 days without measurable rain, and in 2021, The total precipitation for the year was 1.86 inches, well below the norm of 4.18 inches. Even if it rained more often, the rain is filled with contaminants, it would only knock off the surface dirt and not the grime build-up that remains on the glass. Accumulation of dust can not only block rays from reaching the cells, but It can also increase heat to the solar panel which will make them less efficient since solar panels work better at cooler temperatures. So, if they are less efficient, that means your net metering is also, and you could eventually have to pay an electric bill.

If you live somewhere with a dry climate like a desert, and have lots of dirt and dust, Cleaning Solar Panels should be done at least every 6 months. It could even be monthly, depending on how severe dust pollution is in your area. Another benefit of cleaning your solar panels is that you can inspect each one for damage or soon-to-be damage like cracked glass, compromised seals, loose wires, and even bird nesting. Another item to check that most people forget about is the roof itself. Solar panels are attached to your roof with bolts, which means there are now holes in your roof. If properly installed they shouldn't leak but, that doesn't mean they don't. high winds can vibrate and stress roof attachments, it is a good idea to check for missing or loose bolts and any signs of water damage around or leakage through the bolts. When it does eventually rain, the dirt and grime can collect in the borders of the frame which could increase the possibilities of leakage currents and a reduction in performance. If any water gets in the panel, it could render it useless. Some warranties have a clause in the contract that they must be cleaned once or twice a year and must provide proof.

In this article, I have pointed out the problem with dirty solar panels and why it is important to clean and inspect them. Now I will discuss the two paths to the solution. One is filled with flaws and peril while the other is as easy as Sunday morning. The first path involves you getting your big shaky ladder and climbing up to the roof while trying to bring up equipment like a hose, towels, and a mop. You nervously reach and clean all around your solar panels trying not to fall off the roof or on the panels themselves. And if you made it and successfully "knocked" the dirt off, you still must deal with the fabulous hard water of the deserts that leave that white film on anything it touches. And when you're all done, you must bring yourself and everything else back down.

Or, you can sit in the comfort of your own home and have a professional do it. While you watch T.V. or just staring off into space, a solar panel cleaning professional will make sure your energy production stays optimal. Not only do they have all the equipment needed, but they have the right equipment. Water from the hose, in fact, water from the city in general is terrible. It is filled with contaminants that leave residue on anything it touches. Most solar panel cleaning professionals like Barron's Solar Wash Company in Henderson NV, use a 3-stage RO/DI filtration system that removes all the minerals and contaminates from the water, making it a dirt-attracting sponge as it passes through the system. The water is then fed through a pole with a non-scratching bristle brush at the end of it. After the washing process, it dries spotless, just like a car wash.

A professional also has the experience of climbing ladders, walking, and working on many different types of roofs with professional equipment. And if you are worried about damage to your solar panels while they are being cleaned or if the person happens to fall off the roof, a reputable solar panel cleaning company will have enough insurance to cover any accident. I hope this article brings some answers to the ones that were trying to figure out why their solar panels are not performing like they used to. And to the ones that are wondering if they should, "try to get up there." If you happen to be in Las Vegas, NV, or the surrounding areas, we at Barron's Solar Wash Company would love to help keep you safe and energy efficient.
